The Linnaeus Correspondence

Carl Linnaeus's correspondence online.

The Swedish Linnaeus Society had the responsibility for a project that published the correspondence of Carl Linnaeus digitally. The project was starten in advance of the tercentenary in 2007 and is now finished. The letters are available on the platform Alvin.

Carl Linnaeus received around 3000 letters and there are some 2000 letters from him preserved. He had around 600 correspondents all over the world. His letters are available as images of the original manuscripts, but there are also english summaries and transcriptions as well as biographical and bibliographical data. Also letters to and from Carl Linnaeus fillies (junior) are included. The letters are important as sources not only to information on the works and lives of Carl Linnaeus pater and filius, but in general also more broadly on the 18th century and history of science.

The project was funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and placed at The Swedish Linnaeus Society and The Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences during different periods. It was also supported by The Linnean Society of London and Uppsala University.
